Classified Ads: Call to Action in Marketing & Sense of Urgency

By Daniel Tolliday

According to the Newspaper Association of America, almost 7 out of 10 people read newspaper content each week. These figures include both digital and print newspapers. Mobile media such as tablets, phones and laptops are an easy way for consumers to browse classified ads and search for products both locally and overseas. This means that your classified ads need to be properly constructed to stand out from the millions of others out there.

Use Direct Response Copy

Using direct response copy throughout your classified ad is the most important element to make your product or service stand out from the rest. This means that you need a special offer, a noticeable heading and a call-to-action phrase at the end of your ad. Call-to-action phrases include "Call us now," "Get in quick!" and "Act now!" among many others. It will need to flow together, and there needs to be a sense of urgency to prompt the customer to act quickly.

Communicate Messages Clearly

If readers don't understand what you are trying to say, chances are your ad will be skimmed through without much notice. Regardless of whether you're advertising online or in print, readers need to know how your product or service will benefit them. Remember to maintain a clear and concise tone throughout your classified ad copy.

Include Relevant Information

If you're advertising a new product or giving something away for free, try to include it at the beginning of your classified ad. Your ad will benefit from the offer being located in the heading or title, because this will be the first part of the ad your reader will see. Don't forget to include accurate contact information toward the end.

Utilize Online Classifieds

Online classifieds can be effective as lead-generation tools. Websites such as Gumtree.com and Craigslist.org generate high traffic from countries all around the world, particularly the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia. Users can search these websites for products, services and jobs located in their own areas. Newspaper classifieds prices vary depending on circulation. For example, an ad in a small community newspaper can cost around $9, while pricing for an ad in a larger paper such as the New York Times can start at around $200. Online classifieds usually list ads at no charge, making them an excellent alternative for your advertising strategy.
